In the 1800’s when people were heading west for a new life and opportunities, two wagon trains left at the same time from the same departure point and were headed to the Oregon territory. As we know, wagon trains took a long time and had to go through difficult circumstances to get to their destinations. With these two particular wagon trains, the one group decided to never stop, just keep moving everyday out on the trail. The other train made the decision to each week, stop for one day of rest.

Well over time both trains arrived in Oregon. Want to know which one arrived first? It was the train that stopped one day each week to rest. Even though the other train did not follow that pattern and kept going without rest, spending more days physically moving on the trail, they came in second.

That seems odd that a group that stopped systematically beat a group that kept going. Obviously the group that stopped were more productive the days they were working. People (and animals) were not made to always be going, never having a break. We are wired that way. Our bodies need rest, rejuvenation in order to function. Over time productivity will be hindered when we do not slow down sometime, somehow. Statistically we humans are involved in more accidents when we are tired than when we are firing on all cylinders.

Slowing down does not seem to be the American way. In order to get ahead, we got to keep going. It may be also that we are afraid of slowing down. What will we do? Or someone will get ahead of us! For those of us who have children soon realize that our children are not impressed that we are always working (whatever that work may be). They want us. It is just like I have often seen where a child will take the face of the parent and with their little hands on each side of the parent’s cheeks, turn mom/dad’s face to look right at them because they want our attention.

Technology has done us a disservice in that we have become basically one hundred percent available to vitually everyone. That makes it very difficult to slow down to focus on your family and yourself for at least one day a week. Last month many questions were posed about having significance in your life. I can not tell you how important it is to ask yourself some of those questions and ponder what the answers may be.

Life is short, our time with our families is shorter and figuring out who you really are affects eternity. Honestly, life is basically all about relationships. If we do not slow down, life may become much shorter than what you want (death) and/or we lose out on what life is truly all about. Very few people on their death bed have lamented that they did not work enough or should have put in longer hours at work. Rather so often, the laments are about relationships that were lost or not reconciled.

If we do not intentionally place time in our lives to slow down even once a week, we place in jeopardy potentially our health, our joys and our relationships. Yes, there are periods of time when things come up that we burn the candle at both ends, but that is not healthy for long periods of time. If we desire to be leaders, then we must impact people through relationships, not our resumes. Which wagon train would you have wanted to be a part of?

ILLUSTRATION

When you see geese flying along in a “V” formation, you might be interested in knowing that science has discovered why they fly that way. Research has revealed that as each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately behind it. By flying in a “V” formation, the whole flock adds at least 71 percent greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own.

Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly fells the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone. It quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front. When the lead goose gets tired, he rotates back in the “V” and another goose flies the point.

The geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep their speed. Finally, when a goose gets sick or is wounded by gunfire and falls out, two other geese fall out of formation and follow it down to help and protect it. They stay with the goose until it is either able to fly again or dead, and then they launch out on their own or with another formation to catch up with their group.

SUCCESS TO SIGNIFICANCE – “THE ONE THING”

How would you define success if that question was posed to you by someone starting out in your field? Answers would be given all over the chart. Is there just one right answer to that question? As it has been said of climbing the ladder of success, that it is a great climb until you get to the top and realize you were climbing up the wrong ladder or building.

An interesting phenomenon occurs for a fair number of people when they reach their late thirty’s and early forty’s. They have worked hard to become successful in whatever venture of life they have chosen. Yet they share that even though they have gained success, they are still lacking significance in life, where they have really tapped into who they are and the impact they want to leave on others. Success does not guarantee significance. Significance is knowing who you are and what your purpose in life is. What makes you tick? What is your passion, the spark that needs only a little breeze which then will ignite a blazing inferno?

In the movie “City Slickers”, Jack Palance and Billy Crystal are on a dude ranch, riding horseback out on the range. Palance is lamenting about the guys who come out to the ranch for a two week stint and think all their problems will be solved. So he asks Crystal if he knows what the secret of life is and holds up his index finger. Crystal does not get it so Palance tells him that it is one thing. Stick to that and everything else does not matter. Crystal questions what that one thing is and Palance replies that is what he has to figure out.

Do you know yourself? Gandhi once said, “Be the change you want to be in the world.” Developing yourself builds self-confidence which will attract and inspire others. Do not lead others until you can lead yourself. You cannot lead people where you have not been. What changes do you desire to make and why make those changes?

We do not ask these questions because we are too busy doing what we think is right which can answer the success questions of life. But is the “right thing” your “one thing”? Business leader Peter Drucker teaches the difference between efficiency and effectiveness is efficiency is doing things right while effectiveness is doing the right things.

Changing jobs is not necessarily what will help you find true success which is significance in life. Begin with yourself. Ask yourself if you could snap your fingers and know that you could not fail, what would you do? At the end of your life, you would love to be able to look back and know that you did something about …? The area where you feel you could make the most significant contribution would be…? What is your personality like, what talents and abilities do you have, is God a part of your thought process?

Consider these questions, write down your thoughts about them. Involve a friend or find a coach to lead you through the process. I have helped people through this process and when they begin to understand who they are and what their purpose is in life, you could not pay them enough money in the world to replace the joy they have found in their lives. One of the saddest statements a person offers about him/herself at the end of their life, is, “If I only would have ….”

Educational guru William Glasser has indicated that one of our basic needs as humans is the freedom to choose. Your motivation to accomplish a task greatly diminishes when you feel trapped and do not have a choice to do that task. It may be a matter of attempting to get out of the situation rather than accomplishing the task. Heaping guilt upon people to do something they have no voice in is not a good motivator. Telling them they have to do the task because you are the boss does not motivate your people either. It does not gain you points with people no matter if it is a paid position or a volunteer situation.

Giving people the opportunity to choose, letting them have a voice goes great distances for morale and enthusiasm. A motivated worker in any situation is one of the greatest assets going for you. Plus it reinforces being a servant leader, as you show in reality that you do value the opinions and feelings of those you lead. Find ways to involve your people, no matter what level they are at.

When I do not want to involve people, I have to check whether I am being selfish and worried that by involving people in decisions or activities, they will not think the same way I think nor do the activity exactly as I do it. You do lose some “control” when you involve others and give them the freedom to choose. It is the struggle to work through. Am I here to serve them or are they to serve me?

This is not saying that you simply become a wash rag and get blown in any and every direction. If you are in charge, you are the bottom line and have to be the one who takes responsibility, which means there will be times that the choices made by others under your responsibility will be halted or curtained for the betterment of the whole. Establishing relationships with the people you are involved with will make those tough situations go much more smoothly when they arise.

Giving people some say, some freedom to choose will enhance relationships and be a key motivator in accomplishing what needs to happen. You will also show you care about them as individuals. Where freedom to choose is squelched, you see a look of hopelessness in the faces of those people and that is a look that is extremely difficult to change when people know there is no hope on the horizon.

Putting the words, servant and leadership together may seem to be a contradiction of terms for leaders. Yet a fair amount has been written in recent years about the servant leader concept.

Being a servant leader is not a contradiction, rather it opens a whole new way of leading people. It is not the idea of being soft and letting people do what they want, nor being spineless when the situations arise where a leader needs to be firm and unmovable.

For whom would you rather work? The person who puts you down, does not lead by example nor is interested in you as a person, or would you want to work for someone who takes an interest in who you are as a person, encourages and builds you up and is available when needs arise at work? That is a no brainer for the majority of people. When I am a servant leader, I am thinking of those for whom I have a responsibility to oversee. I look out for their best interests, caring about them as people rather than simply the means to the end product or result.

What that means is I lead by example by not talking about people behind their back, that I deal with conflict straight up meaning if I have a problem with someone, I go to that person and deal with the conflict. More morale has been destroyed by violating that principle.

I make myself available to listen and get feedback. I look for ways to help because my desire is to make my employees or those under my responsibility strive for excellence, letting them know that they play a vital role in the success of the organization or business.

If I am being a servant leader, then expecting my employees to be on time or when it is the end of a break, begin work immediately. I need to be on time and give my employer the full amount of time required of me.

The argument will arise stating that there just is not enough time in one’s day to be out among the workers, to take time to be available. The higher up you go in leadership, the greater the value that needs to be placed in your greatest resource available to you – your people.

It is amazing to observe and listen to different work situations, about the good and bad you hear and see and the vast majority of time, it relates back to the one in charge. If you think that just because you have a title, you will get the respect and loyalty that title brings, you are totally fooling yourself. If there is bickering and a lackadaisical attitude among the employees, I can almost guarantee that it comes from the leader of that group if the leader has been there for some time.

If you want to change the environment in your work place, start with yourself. It will affect not only you, but also those around you. Serve your people and watch for changes.

Three adventurous partners, Craig Brooks, Ross Nelson and Marty Aubol, joined me for a three week jaunt to Zambia. Landing in Zambia July 4^th, Craig and Ross, both pastors, taught in Lusaka while Marty took a five hour bus ride with fellow Zambian Pastor Captain, to Mongu, which is in the western province of Zambia. Marty, a veteran of two previous WILD trips, endured the ride which was cramped and lasted several hours longer. The week’s experience for all three was positively impacting.

Meanwhile Allan Kasungami and I flew to Namibia on the 5^th, to teach at a church in the capital city, Windhoek. What a city. Windhoek is on the edge of the desert and very modern. I was reminded of cities in the SW part of the USA with the arid lands. It is the only African city I have been in where there a re overhead passes on the road system. Namibia has the notoriety of being the country with the widest gap between the rich and poor. The poorest area where squatters lived reminded me of the dump in Monterrey, Mexico, where people where given land to live. The new president’s Statehouse makes the White House look like a hunting shack. Also on the trip I had the opportunity to sit in the Speaker of the Parliament’s seat for a few moments. What great Namibian power I had for a short time!

Allan and I taught each night during the week. We averaged about 40 people per night. As we teach on spiritual leadership, there is always the tension between what truth is cultural and what is biblical. No difference in Namibia. It is culturally acceptable and found in the church for the husband to not only have a wife but a girlfriend. One woman asked if you can be a good spiritual leader in the church if you are not a good husband.

In the area of character, we spoke about the life of Joseph in Genesis, Samuel (1 Samuel 12) and then the qualifications Paul put down in

1 Timothy 3. Among the church group that night, we had a level of honesty which I have not seen in a long time as several male leaders shared of their struggles to stay sexually pure to their wives. God was piercing hearts that night. The leadership did meet with us later in the week to receive advice of where to go with developing leaders after we left. This church is strategic for leadership development not only in Windhoek but regionally.

Our accommodations were great and we were fed well (steak, lamb, liver), including a traditional meal of an actual sheep head that had been roasted. (It was looking at me, pleading to not be eaten.) I ate a little. It was okay. At the home I stayed, they had a satellite dish. Sports Center was on the day we left for Zambia and I noticed breaking news that Favre was asking the Packers for his unconditional release…I did pinch myself to make sure I was not dreaming that up. (Weird dreams can result from the precautionary malaria medication I am taking.)

During our second full week in Africa, we all traveled five hours north to Ndola, Zambia. Here eight pastors joined Marty and me for three very full days of strategic planning for WILD. From Tuesday morning until late Thursday night, we discussed, prayed and planned WILD’s future in southern Africa. Mixed in was training on team development and becoming emotionally healthy to be spiritually healthy. I was able to do the teaching and training those three days which the team responded well to. If we accomplish our strategic objectives by following through on our action steps, WILD will have made a quantum leap forward in development in Africa. That would have been worth the trip right there, but God did much more.

One of the objectives the pastors laid out was to establish a regional director for WILD in Zambia. This director will be the point person in southern Africa and work closely with me in preparation and the continuing development of WILD’s presence in that region. To me that was key to have laid the groundwork for this position before leaving Africa. That was accomplished and I am beginning to look for the person to fill this voluntary position.

Another unexpected blessing was meeting Samuel Yawila, possibly the denomination’s (Evangelical Church in Zambia’s -ECZ) only partially funded youth pastor in all of the over 800 churches. Samuel sat in on the strategic planning at the request of Allan. He gave some good insight during the sessions but Marty and I really got to know him the last several days we were in Zambia as Samuel ended up to be our hosts those days.

Samuel has a great heart for the Lord and a vision of reaching the 30 and younger people group for Christ. He gets no salary but the church he serves at, Northrise, pays for his housing where we held our strategic planning. He has had very little training so I am sending him the training material I use with youth leaders here in Wisconsin. His job is youth pastor and trust God to supply his needs as again, he gets no salary. There are several colleges in Ndola so he works with high school students through college age students. This guy is the real deal as far as wanting to serve the Lord by reaching the youth of Africa.

I got very excited about Samuel because he is an answer to the prayer of who will reach the youth of Africa (the 30’s and younger) because whomever does reach that generation (Muslims, Communists (China is flooding Africa with money and people resources) or Christians) will own the continent for generations to come. On the 20^th I had the privilege to speak at Northrise, Samuel’s church and of the 100 or so in the audience that day, 80% were easily young people. That was like throwing raw meat to a hungry lion – I was pumped to preach to them. Here was the hope of Africa sitting in front of me.

This gives an overview of what occurred over the three weeks in Africa. Already for next year, there are at least three churches that have asked WILD to train them and the leadership of the ECZ has asked me to go to Angola to train refugees who lived in Zambia during Angola’s civil war and now have returned to their country.

CHANCE ENCOUNTERS OF A GOD KIND

One other story I need to share that shows how God is working and using

WILD. Returning from Namibia, Allan and I flew through Johansasburg, South Africa. We had to go to the Transit Counter to acquire our ticket to Zambia. While in line, the guy in front of me noticed that I was wearing a Badger sweatshirt. He (Justin) inquired if I was from Wisconsin and told me he was from north of Detroit. So we exchanged our stories about why we were in that part of the world. I explained about WILD and that I had worked for a youth ministry for 27 years. Thus people consider me like a youth pastor.

There was a young couple ahead of Justin, Allan and I who had a year old son named Isaiah (Could they be Christians? Why else would you name your child that name.) The husband, Ken had stepped out of line to play with Isaiah. When the wife heard that I was a youth pastor, she whipped around and said her husband was a youth pastor and they were headed to Malawi to be a youth pastorate at a church. So she called Ken over to join in on the conversation and talk to this youth pastor.

Ken asked why we were in Africa, so I told them and explained WILD. I mentioned I was wearing my Badger sweatshirt and had gotten my missions understanding through the Navigators on campus at Madison, thus the philosophy WILD had with giving out training materials for free. They got excited and said they were Navigators too. His eyes lit up and wanted to know more about WILD.

How did we make contacts for WILD? Well we told them that this is the way God was establishing most contacts, by “chance” encounters. Ken asked for a business card and Allan had a WILD card so Ken took it and said he would email me as it was their turn to go up to the ticket counter. (I have not heard from him yet – please pray that he does make contact.)

Through all this Justin was listening. I thanked him for asking where I was from and that God had used him to bring Ken and his wife to connect with us. I do not know where Justin is spiritually, but he got a huge dose of God and Jesus in those 5 minutes. There are no “chance” encounters in God’s sovereignty as we shared with Justin. He is another prayer request, for his salvation.

Update July 11

Wanted to quickly let you know that things continue to go well.  Met 
with the church council leaders last night and talked about what the 
next steps were.  Very positive.

Health wise I am doing well and having time with Allan and another 
pastor from Zambia this week has also been very beneficial for both of 
them.  We have been treated royally here and it is one of the best
cities I have been to in other countries.

We leave Namibia at 2 tomorrow, 7 am your time.  and get back to 
Zambia at 2 p.m. your time.

I am not sure the next time I will be able to email.  It could be 
several days as on Monday we will travel by bus to Ndola, half hour 
from Henry's home town.

Update July 10

It is thurs. afternoon and it is chilly today.  I am wearing a Badger
sweatshirt all day.  Wanted to let you know I have been eating
interesting things.  Yesterday, for lunch at a fancy resturant which
the leadership of the church we are working with hosted, we had lamb.
It was fine.  Last night at the home of my host, we had liver and
onions.  It was prepared okay but still is not my favorite meat.  This
noon we ate with the leadership again at the church and as part of
their meal, they served a sheep head.  It was roasted and it tasted
okay.  I had a small piece.  It had the charcoal flavor.  So the
adventure this week is food.

Teaching is going well.  The leadership could not meet with us this
noon to discuss what they will do with leadership development once we
leave, so we will meet tonight after the teaching time.

The church wishes that we could stay a few more weeks to help them
wrestle even more with the leadership training.  Staying in Windhoek
is pretty easy, especially where I am staying.  Now if I were staying
at by the squatters' area, that would be a different story.

Africa Update, July 9

Had a great day today seeing Windhoek.  It has the greatest
discrepency in income distribution - from richest to poorest.  And we
say both extremes.  The poorest reminds me of Monterrey, Mexico, where
the squatters were living in a dump.  That is so similar here.  The
President's new Statehouse makes the White House look like kinda a
garage.  I did get to sit in the Speaker of the Parliment"s seat for a
few moments today.  I had Namibian power for a few moments.

Last night's teaching and subsequent response was one of the most
powerful I have ever experienced.  We talked about godly character and
dealt with the story of Joseph, then Samuel (1 Sam 12) and then the
qualifications for leaders found in 1 Timothy.  Several men during our
discussion shared with the congregation about how difficult it is to
stay sexually pure, that it is a hard struggle.  It was the honesty
that was being shared that you knew God was dealing with peoples'
hearts.

We will be meeting tomorrow with the leaders to discuss what they can
do when we leave.  They know something very special is happening this
week and want to continue the leading of the Lord.  Wow,Wow,Wow!!!

We are doing well.  It gets down to freezing at night and when homes
don't have heat, it gets chilly.  Fortunately, there are warm blankets
to put on you.

Departure

Hello All,

In a few short hours Marty,Ross,Craig and I will be departing. A couple of prayer requests to share with you.

One is for the schedule. I am not sure what will be happening during the second week for us yet. I received an email this morning and things are still unclear for where the four of us will minister.

Another request is as each of us does serve and teach, that lives will be challenged by the Holy Spirit to develop in their spiritual growth and want to influence their worlds for Christ, to serve as spiritual leaders wherever they are in society.

Money is coming in but honestly I do not have a clue what costs we will be facing in Africa because the schedules are very much up in the air. I do know that all the plane tickets are covered. Beyond that, we need to trust the Lord.

That is the slogan of the missions conference at which I had the great opportunity to speak. About 500 pastors and leaders from Nepal and India took part in this first ever national missions conference in Nepal. My contact, Ram Prasad Shrestha, had the vision to put this conference together. It was the answer to seven years of unceasing prayers of many throughout the world.

In the mid-1950’s, there was only one church (Christianity had just been introduced to Nepal after a very long absence). Today there are approximately 3000 churches but 95% of the pastors are untrained. Nepalis are found in 105 countries and the leaders of the Church have the vision to put a Nepali missionary in each of those countries.

Why Nepal? It is strategically placed in Asia and the Christians greatly desire to reach out to the people groups in their region: the Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Maoists. They have the desire and vision to impact their world. As it was clearly shared at the Missions Conference, one of the greatest needs for the Nepali Church is leadership development. In a country where the illiteracy rate is high, there are 90 to 130 languages spoken (with only one Bible translation), and less than half of the population speak Nepali while 90% of the churches worship in Nepali, it is easy to say that there are problems dealing with communication.

WILD can help meet the needs of some of these problems. The illiteracy rate and the multiple language barriers have started my wheels turning because there are similar problems in Africa. Ram has translated the spiritual leadership material (that was given to him 18 months ago) into Nepali. His comments on the material include that this spiritual leadership tool is easy to teach, understandable no matter the educational level of a person and transferable from one culture to another. We have heard the same thing from African pastors. God is amazing how He has led to put this leadership tool together.

With the assistance of a translator, I spoke twice during the Missions Conference on leadership issues. A few pastors spoke English but for the most part I was in the dark when they spoke to each other. With the exception of three others who gave their messages in English, people could have picked on me all day and I would not have known the difference.

The second week of my time in Nepal was spent at Ebenezer Bible College where I taught 14 hours to third year students. the 12 guys and five women who comprised my class have all their classes in English (no translator – Yeh!) These vibrant students met with me over a four day period and we had a ball learning and discussing the material on leadership. They each had a copy of the material, so I could highlight different portions. It would take 40 hours or more to go through all the material.

I received feedback from some of the students, mainly in the form of questions as they wrestle through the material. Within a week or so I expect to hear from all the students. Being an elective class, I was instructed to give an exam and then a grade on that exam. This class graduates in May and they all are determining where God is leading them.

One of the female students is Maya. She comes from a village in western Nepal and Maya is the first Christian from that village. Her goal is to go back to her village and serve the Lord, proclaiming the Gospel to her own people. Now she also has a tool to help develop Christian leaders.

Knowing that I would have a fair amount of down time to myself on this trip, I intentionally took projects along to work on. To be honest, these two weeks were the best times I have had being alone with God since my sabbatical six years ago. In the continuing development of spiritual leadership training and material, I am doing Biblical character studies. Right now I am looking at Peter from day one when Jesus met him through the Gospels, Acts and writings of 1 and 2 Peter. Wow! I was able to dig ever so deeply into that study and God was speaking to me.

During every trip I seek to learn what the next steps are for WILD. As for Nepal, Ram and I discussed the great need for spiritual leadership development. So the plan is to gather 20-30 key Christian leaders next Fall and spent four days or so in a Trainer of Trainers week. Similar to what we did in Zambia this past summer, we will teach the material to these leaders plus add aspects of how to teach, how to lead a discussion, differences between public speaking and communicating, the whys to the material and more. Ram would like to have this at a retreat center possibly somewhere in the Himalayan Mountains, away from their hectic world so that we can be much more sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading for each participant’s life. This would be a huge step toward meeting the need of Christian leadership training in Nepal.

Along with the Nepal trip, WILD will take a team of trainers to Zambia sometime in July and teach either on a National or regional scale. At the same time, our pastor friend, Allan, wants me to go with him to Namibia to launch the teaching to churches with whom he has already established relationships and taught. Prior to this trip in July, another person has asked me to go with him to Zambia in late February or early March so that he can share about economic and youth development with our contact people. During that time I would assemble as many of the trained leaders as possible and teach on several of the subjects that have been requested by the leaders plus work to put the July training together. There is an outside possibility that we would take a construction team at the same time to finish the school in Lusaka which ministers to many AIDS orphans. Of course, this all takes money, so I need to get booking.

I close this letter with a story about my plane rides this year. Our world is much different than it was even ten years ago. Flying back from Zambia this summer, a Muslim woman who was an American citizen but knew very little English, was seated next to me during the flight from Amsterdam to Minneapolis. Then on the way from Amsterdam to Dehli, India, a Hindu man ended up next to me. In fact, he was the most uniquely dressed and face painted person on the plane. Sitting next to these two individuals I sensed God asking the question of how could I reach these people for Christ. How will they find out that the only way to heaven is through Jesus Christ? Our traditional ways of sharing about Jesus most likely will not work. I am definitely wrestling through these questions. In the simplest answer, it comes down to having faith in Christ, to trust only Jesus for the forgiveness of our sins and nothing else. There are many more steps to get a person of another world religion - or even our youth - to understand that Jesus is the only way and He alone is God. That is the challenge for the Church right now.

Titus

Although not mentioned in Acts, Titus was one of Paul’s companions in whom he placed a considerable amount of trust. He is first heard of at the time of the Gentile controversy when he accompanied Paul and Barnabas to Jerusalem (Gal. 2:1). He provided a test case, since he was a gentile, but he was apparently not compelled to be circumcised. (Gal. 2:3). Titus probably accompanied Paul on his subsequent journeys, but no definite information of his work is available until the time of the Corinthian crisis. He had evidently been acting as Paul’s representative at Corinth during the year preceding the writing of 2 Corinthians (cf. 8:16) with a special commission to organize the collection scheme there. The task was unfinished, for Titus is later urged by Paul to return to Corinth to see its completion (2 Corinthians 8:6).

A more delicate task was the smoothing over of the tense situation which had arisen between Paul and the Corinthians, a task which clearly demanded a man of great tact and force of character. He appears to have been a stronger personality than Timothy (cf. 1 Corinthians 16:10; 2 Corinthians 7:15) and possessed ability as an administrator. A comparison of 2 Corinthians and 7 suggests that he carried a letter from Paul to the Corinthians which has since been lost (the ‘severe letter’) and in which the apostle took them to task with much anguish of heart for their high-handed attitude. Titus eventually rejoined Paul in Macedonia (2Corinthians 7:6) with good news, and as a result 2 Corinthians was written and was and was willingly carried by Titus(2 Corinthians 8:16f.), who seems to have possessed a particular affection and serious concern for the Corinthians. He is described by the apostle as his ‘partner and fellow worker’ (8:23), who would not think of taking advantage of those entrusted to his care (12:18).

From the Epistle addressed to him it may be surmised that Titus accompanied Paul to Crete subsequent to the latter’s release from the Roman imprisonment and was left there to consolidate the work (Titus 1:5f). The letter urges the use of authority in establishing a worthy ministry, in overcoming opposition, and in the teaching of sound doctrine. He was summoned to rejoin Paul at Nicopolis when relieved by either Artemas or Tychicus (Titus 3:12), and may possibly have been further commissioned at Nicopolis for an evangelistic mission to Dalmatia on which he was engaged at the time when Paul wrote 2 Timothy(2 Timothy 4:10). Later tradition, however, assumed his returned to Crete and described him as Luke’s brother (which might explain the absence of his name from acts), see W.M. Ramsay, SPT, p. 390. D.G.

At Corinth, he was to get the contributions of the church there in behalf of the poor saints at Jerusalem sent forward (2 Cor. 8:6,16;12:18). He rejoined Paul when Paul was in Macedonia and cheered him with things Titus brought from Corinth (2 Cor. 7:6-15) – Dealt with a difficult situation that arose between Paul and the Corinthians (2 Cor. 7:6-15)

Titus(book) written about same time as 1 Timothy – because of similarities between what Paul writes in both books.
He was a go getter, passionate leader. Could be counted on – the “go to” guy. Had diplomacy and firm resolve.
Acted the same way as Paul would have (2 Cor. 12:18) because Paul knew Titus well. They had spent a great deal of time together so Titus saw and understood how Paul ticked. Paul’s life rubbed off onto Titus because leadership is more caught than taught.

Paul establishes again his place and role in the church.

Titus 1:1-4 – v.1 – Servant of God

Apostle of Jesus for 1, faith of God’s elect, 2, knowledge of the truth that leads to Godliness. God was using Paul to call out a people for himself and to teach them the truth that is needed for godly living – Paul’s ministry was armed at both the salvation and sanctification of God’s people.

v. 2-3 – All of Paul’s ministry was “a view” to eternal life (resting on) God promised eternal life from the beginning.

- In God’s timing all things occur including when Jesus came and Paul was called.

v.4 – To Titus – my true son – Paul was probably responsible for Titus’ conversion.

1:9 – Hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught. ( know it and teach it correctly) – need to continually grow in knowledge and understanding of Scripture. You’ve got to be able to handle the truth.

For two reasons – Why? So that encourage others by the sound doctrine (with right teaching)

Show and share the right way, the right interpretations; be able to teach the Word.

And refute those who oppose it (show those who oppose it where they are wrong) – Show people where they have gone wrong with the Word and be bold enough to stand up for truth; be able to show those who are teaching the Word incorrectly the right interpretation and/or application.

*Bottom line is in order for a person to be a leader of a church/ministry, you need maturity spiritually, emotionally and so often physically.

vs.5-9 – Qualifications for church leadership. Paul hits on 5 areas.

1. Personal life – blameless, not self-willed, not quick tempered, not violent, sober minded, holy, self controlled.

2. Family life – husband of one wife, with faithful children

3. Social life – hospitable, not acused of dissipation (being wild), not given to wine

4. Financial life – Steward of God, not greedy for money

5. Professional life – not accused of insubordination, lover of what is good, just holding fast the faithful word, able to exhort and convict those who contradict.

v.10 – Gives the reason for verse 9 –

10 – There is a bunch of people who are rebellious, mere talkers, deceivers among the Jews

- Deceivers among the circumcision – They were attempting to refute Paul’s teachings.

- Timothy faced similar opposition in Ephesus – (1Tim. 1:3-11, 6:3-10, 2 Tim. 2:14-18)

- Mere talkers – Talk a lot but don’t say anything

*As an elder, a spiritual leader, you have to be willing to speak the truth with boldness, meekness as opportunity rises.

v.11 – This group of Jews must be stopped, must be kept from more destructive talking

Why?? – They are destroying whole households, families, by what they are teaching. Plus they are/were making money from it.

v.12 – Paul quotes Epimedes, a Cretan poet and philosopher from 600 BC who was considered to be a religious prophet. The saying had truth to it, the Cretans had a general reputation of being liars, though the churches had noble Christians in their midst. Paul was emphasizing the false teachers possessed these baser Cretan tendencies.

- God’s grace turned the lives of Cretans around, so they weren’t the way described in this verse – liars, lazy, beastly.

v.13-14 – though not myths – cultural Christianity vs Biblical Christianity

· Testimony is true – There is truth to what Paul said in previous verse; no getting around that.

· This is what Titus is to do to deal with the situation

Rebuke them sharply in order that they will be healthy in the faith. The ultimate goal is to restore someone, to recover them from their error (Gal. 6:1-2) Discipline is to be used to draw a person back.

· Paul wanted these false teachers to get right spiritually and get away from Jewish myths and the commandments of men who are teaching in error(traditionalists, legalism[saved by the law and live by the law{619 additional rulers set forth by the Pharisees}]). Some of the other writings were the Talmud.

· It wasn’t shock therapy but Paul instructed Titus to get “in their faces”

· We have to be careful of what we tell others to do spiritually –“You must do…….to be spiritual.” What myths and fables do we offer up?

v 15 – Commands of v 14 probably included from Jewish and Gnostic influences, rules about eating, drinking and purification(Col. 2:20-23, 1 Tim. 4:1-5)

· Remember Jesus’ teachings on purification was largely a matter of the internal rather than the external (Mark 7:15, Luke 11:39-41) If you are internally impure, all you touch is impure.

· The problem is the mind and conscience of the teachers were impure; thus they spewed out impurity. *Romans 12:2 – Renew the mind.

· If someone is going to change, you have to do an inside job. That is true for salvation as well as sanctification.

v.16 – They say they are Christians but their actions are speaking so loud that others can not hear the words nor see any evidences of being a Christian – Hypocrisy

· James 1:22-25, 2:14-20 – Fruit has to back up your words

· Ceremonies and rituals cannot change a person. Only the Word can. What is inside is what comes out, not reverse.

· Abominable – detestable, disobedient, unfit=disapproved for doing anything good.

· Paul connected theological error with moral deficiency

Chapter 2-v 1 – You must……But as for you! Teach healthy teaching and live that healthy teaching accordingly. Your lifestyle and behaviors will validate sound teaching. Victims of false teachers were out of harmony with sound doctrine. Titus – teach the Word (Col. 4:2, 1 Tim. 4:12)

v.2 – Paul begins with the older men – Why?

Teach several things – Temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love and endurance – (Show maturity)
Temperate – to be at home > pleasant, to be beautiful (not the grumpy old men group). Be attractive in personality.
Worthy of respect – How do you gain respect? Experience, consistency, integrity, treatment of others, serious-minded >not clowns, Grave – honest
Self-controlled – Sexually, tongue, attitude, food and beverage intake
Marks of godliness – 3 central Christian virtues of faith, love and endurance

Endurance is closely aligned with hope

- How do I love others, God, myself?

- How do I show my faith?

- How do I show endurance or hope?

v.3 – Older Women

Behave reverently in the way they live – develop holiness. Their lifestyle was to teach sound doctrine.
Don’t be slanderous and addicted to much wine – these were potential problems as older women whose families were grown, had too much idle time on their hands. Don’t be false accusers, gossipers.
Rather teach young women what is good. Older women were being encouraged to reach outside their homes and share what they had learned with those who would profit from it most. (young women’s focus was home.)

v.4-5 – This is what was to be taught to the younger women. The list emphasized in the original, first what young wives and moms are to be (character) and second what they are to do.

1. Love their husbands and children. How do you do that? What would you teach or share with younger women? Man wants to be respected – so serve him. Serve

2. Be self-controlled (discreet) – How? Discipline, schedule or projects list

3. Pure (chaste) – How? Modesty, keep themselves for their husbands

4. Homemakers (or busy at home) – don’t be idle, gossiper, keep the home well (Can the wife work outside the home?)

5. Good (kind) – Hospitable, friendly, caring, gentle

6. Subject to their husbands (obedient to husbands) – Listen, serve, respond to her husband’s love. Because of the relationship of the spouses, each can be subject to each other.

*Bottom line is that the Word may not be blasphemed or maligned. Young Christian wives and mothers earn the respect of outsiders and not malign the Word. Value what He values. He will then vindicate both His Word and those faithful to it.

v.6 – Young men – be sober minded, be self controlled (moderation, sensibility, self-restraint). Titus could do this one – exhort, encourage the young men.

v.7 – 1. Titus is told to be the example, the pattern to all, but especially young men. Titus is encouraged to do what is right in every setting.

2. In the area of teaching the Word, show integrity, seriousness(reverence), incorruptible (his teaching would show his complete faith in the Word and appreciate the seriousness of the matters he is dealing with.). Let people know that the Word is a holy book that is to be enjoyed & studied, but given a great deal of reverence.

v.8 – Soundness in his speech (whether it be preaching or normal cionversation) would not be condemned. Your speech should show if you are with God or not.

WHY – That way those who oppose you will be ashamed of their attacks because they have no ammunition for their attacks. The coal will fall on them. False accusations have a way of coming back to bite the accusers in the butt. (1 Tim. 4:12) i.e. Daniel 6!

How do you keep teaching sound and your speech right on?

Scripture, hang around Christians going thru tough things, people praying, self-discipline, stay sober and off of drugs, someone train you if you have a gossiping or swearing mouth.

v.9-10 – Slaves made up a good percent of the early Church (maybe up to 90% of names on the catacomb walls were slaves or ex-slaves). This group was an important bunch in the early Church. They were to honor God with their lives.

5 qualities Titus was to teach to them (think about this as an employer/employee relationship)

1. Be subject to their masters in everything – Be obedient

2. Try to please them in all things – do your best because you are ultimately doing this for the Lord, not the earthly master or boss (Col. 3:23-24) (Our work is both hand and heart.).

3. Don’t talk back – hold your tongue, no gossip, no snipping or grumbling, no being disrespectful.

(v.10) 4. Don’t steal from them (pilfering) – Materially, time, financial, ideas, copyright, praise

5. Show that you can be fully trusted (showing all good fidelity) – Faithfulness (i.e Joseph in Potifer’s house and in prison) – How do you develop to that level especially when we are told to only do so much, nothing more and keep to your own area of responsibility?

Why should slaves (employees) do those 5 things?

So that I nevery way they make the teachings about God attractive!

KJV – Adorn = cosmetics (Greek word we get cosmetics from).

Wear the doctrines of God in such a way that you will draw people to Christ. Be out of the ordinary, live at a higher level – Col. 3:23-24, 1Peter 2:18-25

How can we live at a higher level?

Our behavior needs to be consistent, in accord with scripture – your walk talks & your talk talks but…..

Role of Grace in Promoting Godly Behavior – Keep reminding the people what Christ has done for us.

Ch. 2:11-14 Educating the Power of Grace

v.11 – When fully understood, it is the Gospel of the grace of God that teaches Christians how to live. This grace has brought salvation to all men in that it is universally available (appeared)(Eph. 2:8-9)

v.12 – The grace of God has redeemed us. That grace helps (leads) us to say “no” to ungodly things and wordly passions and desires. What are ungodly and worldly?

The grace of God does help us to say yes to living self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present time, world. Live for Him and avoid worldly lusts. How do you live a godly life and what are evidences of such a life?

v.13 – Keep living godly lives while we wait for our blessed Hope, the glorious appearing of our great awesome God. Knowing that we have been shown love, mercy, compassion, forgivness, gentleness, kindness, ect. by His grace, we need to live the same way!parable of the unforgiving servant (Matt. 18:23-35)

That is the present reason. We must also live godly because of our glorious future. My life needs to draw others to Christ – letting people know we have a glorious Hope. They have to see the present reality to place their faith in a future Hope. Do I live my life for myself or for others?? I it about me or is it about ________ , drawing that person to Christ. – Temporal verses eternal.

v.14 – Redeem (set free by payment of a price)

Knowing that Jesus paid a terrible price to set free from death, wickedness and purifying (me/us) for Himself, as people that are His very own (peculiar, own special people), would I not want to live my life in such a way that conforms to His will, lest I disappoint Him at His return. Why would I not be eager to do good, be zealous to do good works so as many people as possible would see Jesus in me! (1 John 3:3)

*Ungodly living in a Christian is a clear sign that either the person does not fully understand these verses or he does not believe them or is not a Christian.

Ch.2:15-Ch.3:2 – Gracious behavior that results from grace

v.15 – Titus was a fairly young man and Paul exhorts, challenges, instructed him to be aggressive in his public ministry, encouraging those who were doing well and rebuking those who needed to be corrected; not to be intimidated by no one. Titus needed and had clear instructions.

It takes spiritual courage to say no and do what is right especially when it is not popular nor a good majority. Paul prepared both Titus and Timothy to be able to stand on their own spiritual feet and live their lives so as to be able to lead Churches in the right direction. They had the knowledge and skills to do that. Paul taught, instructed and then empowered them to do the ministry set before them. Each one of us should work to mentor others to help develop them so as to have them reproduce their lives in others.

Ch. 3:1-2 – v.1 –

Remind the church people to be good citizens within their communities, something that was definitely lacking or deficient among Cretans.
Pastors’ jobs include reminding people of what they already know.
Though not mentioned, Paul’s thought was that this behavior should be like that of a Christian’s love, adorning the gospel and making it attractive to others.
A Christian citizen should be an influence for good in the community, demonstrating Jesus’ loveliness through courteous and gracious behavior.

*This is the lifestyle that results as you understand God’s grace.

· 7 qualities of Christian citizens:

1. Be subject to rulers and authorities.

2. Be obedient – obey the laws of the land. *When do we go against the law?

3. Be Ready to do whatever is good. Good works need not be just working out of a church.

v.2 4. Slander no one (speak no evil of anyone) – don’t malign people, don’t gossip, don’t repeat what we say, “Some people will be anything if it is whispered to them.”

5. Be peaceable (be no brawler) How?

6. Considerate (gentle) How?

7. Showing true humility to all – (showing meekness) How? Phil. 2:3-4 – be willing to speak your mind but be able to leave it there – agree to disagree! Stay under Control. Put others ahead of you.

-Grace is a motivation for godly living (3:3-8)

v.3 – We have all had “ before Christ” days and lives. This shows the depravity of man and the state of affairs the world is in today. This illustrates the depth and vastness of His grace. It is only by God’s grace that I am what I am. We were at that time foolish (how are the unsaved foolish?). - not being sensible.

Disobedient – how are we disobedient? (not submissive)

Deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures (not self-disciplined and ready for every good work) – Can’t or don’t have the power to overcome habits.

Malice and envy being hated and hating one another – (opposite of peaceable, considerate, humble) – This characterizes the brutality and viciousness of a society. Without the Holy Spirit in the world today, hell would be on earth. Christians do temper the world situations. (“While a veneer of civilization often obscures the bleak truth, the slightest crack in the surface of society reveals the reality behind the facade.”)

***Thus if we believers are saved by grace, why then can we not overcome things described in vs. 3 ?? i.e. Racial division in our churches for many years, relationships broken because we disagree over parts of the Bible and the results are envy and some levels of malice.

v.4 – When Kindness (excellence in character, gentleness, goodness) and the love of God our saved came onto the scene – God is the initiator, we are the recipients. We could have in anyway, shape or form brought this on. His kindness – He was looking out for us, He didn’t have to do what he would do with Jesus. He could have started over. He could have sent us all to hell.

What thoughts come to your mind when you think about His kindness and love?

v.5 – 1. God in His grace saved us, those who believe.

2. We had no righteousness, nothing worthy of putting on the positive side of the good/bad, redemption/damnation scale.

3. Rather it was His mercy that He did save us

>Kindness, love, mercy all represent aspects of God’s grace. Jesus’ death did it all.

4. He saved us by the (a.) washing of rebirth (regeneration)

Regeneration – spiritual rebirth or renovation, messianic restoration

Washing – means laver (laver was a wash bowl in the court of the tabernacle and later the temple) (Eph.5:25-26, Heb. 9:14, John 3:3) Laver (Ex.30:17-21)

(b.) Renewal of the Holy Spirit (John 3:3ff) – Holy Spirit renews, regenerates us. He renovates us, makes everything new, does change on our character, ect. Renewing – continual process. This verse focuses on what God totally does, nothing we do.

v.6 – God poured out the Holy Spirit generously through Jesus our Savior. Generously or abundantly – very willing to give. I t began with the day of Pentecost.

v.7 – His purpose for pouring out the Holy Spirit on us was that, having be justified (just as we had not sinned), we might/would become heirs having the hope of eternal life. The Holy Spirit’s ministry is intimately involved with bringing to fruition or reality God’s gracious purposes to save – By being justified the Holy Spirit seals our guaranteed inheritance (because we are heirs) – Eph. 1:13-14 – Our inheritance is heaven, eternal life with God. Being the temple of the Holy Spirit, we are marked because the Holy Spirit is in us. So we belong to Him and He is coming for us. (Rom. 8:15-17, Gal. 4:6-7) What do we receive being heirs/children of His?

v.8 – Faithful or trustworthy saying – (1 Tim. 1:15, 3:1, 4:9, 2 Tim. 2:11) – What he is saying you can go to the bark on, because of what he had just been saying is trustworthy, Titus was to stress these things, affirm them all the time – constantly.

- Stress that being saved by grace, the Cretans need to occupy their time by doing good works, promote godly behavior among the Cretans.

- Twice before (2:1,15) Paul instructed Titus to teach these things in accordance with sound behavior.

- Paul was deeply concerned that God’s people devote themselves to doing what is good because these things are excellent and profitable for everyone. It builds up the Body and shows /manifests Jesus to the lost world. – How else does good works promote or illustrate Jesus?

- Good works are the fruit of sound doctrine.

Behavior not consistent with grace (3:9-11)

v.9 – Avoid , turn away from, stay away from foolish controversies, genealogies, arguments and quarrels about the law (circumcision, Pharisees 619 extra rules) because they useless, unnecessary, dumb, gets you no where, only gets people bent out of shape. These things can side track you.

- What are such discussions today, what is divisive today? What behaviors are such also?

v.10 – Reject a divisive, heretic person after the 1^st and 2^nd warning or admonition. Don’t stay with him, it only gets worse. Don’t have anything to do with that person. So people who are advocating useless things, arguments and thereby giving and permeating a divisive and destructive influence in the church, cut him off! Give 2 warnings and then have nothing to do with that person.

- Why two warnings?

v.11 – Failure to yield after 2 warnings gives the indication that the offender’s thinking is warped and sinful, condemning himself. This is similar to Jesus’ teaching in Matt. 18:15-17 where the offender is given three chances, then cut off (2 Thess. 3:14-15)

Final Instructions:

v.12 – Nicopolis – was on the Adriatic coast of Greece. Paul wanted Titus to join him there as soon as Artimus or Tychicus relieved Titus in Crete. Paul gives no indication where he was when he wrote the letter to Titus.

- Tychicus – Companion of Paul’s (Acts 20:4, Eph. 6:21, Colossians 4:7) 1 Timothy 4:12, he was sent by Paul to Ephasus, where he was a pastor. He had been in Rome so it was time to get back to Ephasus. It is interesting that he was being thought of as one being sent being sent then to Crete. Tychicus was probably a maintainer, manager type (C or S personality type)

- Artemus – nothing known.

v.13 – Zenas the lawer – nothing mentioned anywhere in N.T. and nothing known about him, not even if he was Jewish or Roman.

- Apollos – converted Jew, eloquent, fervent, mighty in scriptures (Acts 18:24-25)

- instructed in the gospel by Aquillo and Priscilla (Acts 18:26)

- very popular in Corinth where a faction apparently gathered about him (1Cor. 1:11-12, 3:4-6)

- possibly hesitated to return there for that reason (1 Cor. 16:12)

- Seems that both Zenas and Apollos were in Crete and near Titus (have everything they need) Servants of Christ who are called to travel from place to place have always received support from the churches (3 John 6-8)

v.14 – Paul gives a final admonition about good works. We need to learn to maintain good works. It is something that must be worked at and know that God puts high stock in them.

- There is suggested that the Cretan Christians may have manifested some of their countrymen’s traits (1:12) and unable to provide for daily necessities, much less anyone else’s. – This probably related to Paul’s comments about unproductive lives.

- Paul stresses the need for good works, to serve others. (Eph. 4:28) and not to live and lead unproductive lives. (2 Thess. 3:10-15)

v.15 – Everyone with me sends you (plural) greetings. People were always with Paul. He was always teaching, mentoring, doing things with others. Do I want to live my life that way??

- Greet those who love us in the faith – excluded the false teachers of those who opposed Paul..

- Grace be with you all – similar to 1 and 2 Timothy

- You – plural – addressing a broader audience than Titus.

TESTS OF PETER

A. Luke 5:1-11

1. Test #1 – Willing to Jump to Action test (Bias Toward Action) (Verse 3)

a. What had Peter been up to the previous day (Luke 4:38-52)?

b. When Jesus asked Peter to shove out from shore, the next 30 seconds had eternal implications for him. It was all dependent upon how he would respond to Jesus’ request. What kind of people do you want on your team (staff)? What kind of team player do you want to be? (Ask people to help and see how they respond.) (Jesus was looking for an action guy, and Peter passed that test.)

c. How does I Corinthians 9:24-27 and Hebrews 12:1-3 relate to being ready to be used by God at any moment?

d. Are you ready to be used by God?

2. Test #2 – Can You Follow Directions test (or Do as I Tell You test)

(Verses 4-5)

a. How could have Peter responded? Peter could have said, “Master, not to be mean of disrespectful, but do you have a fishing boat license, or even a fishing license? I know you created the universe, yet you probably aren’t a fishing expert. . . .”

b. What do we learn about Peter’s heart in the way he did respond? He submitted his will to Jesus. (Will people take direction, ultimately following Jesus’ voice?)

c. From Luke 16:10-12, how menial or insignificant of a task are you willing to do? Do you have a submissive heart, willing to do whatever is necessary to get the job done?

3. Test #3 - Who Deserves the Credit test (Verse 8)

a. Who was getting the credit for what had just happened?

b. Is the team built up or encouraged when one person seeks the glory?

c. We have to ask ourselves whether we are doing ministry for God’s glory or our glory. How would you answer that?

d. According to I Peter 5:5-6, if you want to become a great leader, who gets the credit? God and others.

4. Test #4 – The Grander Vision test (Verses 9-10)

a. Fishing is a good profession and comfortable for Peter, but there is a grander or greater vision. What is that?

b. Why do you do what you do (shy are you doing your work)?

c. In Hebrews 12:1, what weights (good things in your life) are keeping you from doing the best God has for you? Is there a job, a new aspect of ministry, God has been speaking to you about, and you have hesitated giving up what is good and comfortable to pursue the best for your live?

d. What are your passions and spiritual gifts? What is your purpose in life?

5. Test #5 - Are You Willing to Stand Alone test (Verse 10)

a. Would Peter have left his fishing and followed Jesus if he would have been the only one?

b. Who are others in the Bible who were willing to stand alone against the majority? Joshua and Caleb, Esther, Daniel, Moses, Nehemiah, David (I Sam. 16:6-12), Abraham, Paul.

c. Your vision is unique for you; your role is made only for you. Are you up to the challenge?

6. Test #6 - Will You Leave It test (the Heart test!) (Verse 11)

a. What did Peter end up doing?

b. How do you deny yourself and take up your cross daily to follow Jesus (Luke 9:23-25)?

c. Are you willing to life for lesser dreams?

d. Are you utilizing your gifts and abilities the best way you know?

e. How will you develop the way you are made?

f. Jesus left it all behind. What have I left behind?

B. John 21:15-22 - Test of Peter’s Heart

v. 15 – “Simon (not Peter – back to basics), do you agape me more than these other disciples seated here?” “Yes, Lord, you know I phileo you.” “Then be grazing my little baby lambs (feed the young believers).” Peter is done boasting – he can only phileo (have affection for) Jesus.

v. 16 – “Simon, do you agape me?” “I phileo you.” “Shepherd the sheep, then.”

v. 17 – (Jesus takes the step to be on the level of Peter’s love and this is where Peter was grieved, for the Lord had to come to his level to communicate what affection there was in His heart. But Jesus did, and did not change his directive.) “Simon, do you phileo me?” “Lord, You know all things, You know I phileo you.” “Then be grazing my sheep. Sheep need to be fed, too.

Jesus met Peter where he was at, beginning with the basics (Simon). Jesus told Peter he was in charge of feeding/developing the young believers and shepherding and feeding the older believers. His ministry would not be easy, as his death was foretold with “hands stretched out,” and how Jesus used him or John was of no concern to others except the individual himself. Our faith and loyalty are to the Lord and He has the right to do what He wants, however He wants.

Perhaps Jesus questioned Peter three times because of the three denials. More so, Jesus met Peter where he was at, built him up and in a short time, Peter’s love got to the agape level. Jesus took the potential and took Peter upward. Peter knew his heart, and boasting was no longer a part of his vocabulary. Most progress occurs when someone realizes where they are at, then moves up. Jesus was preparing Peter for the next steps.

1. What is the progression Jesus uses with Peter in verses 15-17?

2. Did Peter go to Jesus’ level, or Jesus to Peter’s level, in this discussion? What does that say to those of us who lead?

3. Where was Peter’s heart at?

4. Where is your heart at in your relationship with Christ?

5. Where does humility fit in as you develop in your relationship with Christ?

6. As leaders, we need to see where people are at and help develop them. What can you do to become more aware of what God is doing in someone’s life, in order to help them grow?

8. How do we keep from comparing ourselves, as Peter did with John, when we are ministering to others?

9. What do Christians need to do to keep their relationships with Christ at the agape level?

SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD IN PETER’S LIFE

A. Last Supper Prep Luke 22:7-13 (Matthew 26:17-19; Mark 14:12-16)

Jesus sent Peter and John to secure the place they would have the Passover meal and also make the preparations. Everything and everyone occurred as Jesus had told them. Even the man they talked with had the site ready for them, first the guy carrying the water jug and then the owner of the house. Peter saw how God sovereignly plans and has the future. God can be trusted in all the little details. Men did not normally go to the well and draw water to put in jugs.

1. What was unusual about the man carrying the jugs?

2. Do you think the man and the owner of the house knew Jesus (the Teacher)?

3. Who prepared the upper room? How did the owner know what to do?

4. If God is interested in the little details of life, how much can you trust Him to take care of you?

B. The Resurrection John 20:1-9 (Mark 16:1-8; Luke 14:9-12)

Several of the women saw Jesus when they went to the tomb. They were instructed by Jesus to go tell the apostles, even mentioning Peter’s name in Mark. When Peter heard the news, he took off, probably willing to do that totally on his own. He went into the tomb ahead of John to check out what was up. He was still smarting from what happened Thursday night and early Friday morning. It blew him out of the water spiritually and he was definitely reeling. “Was this all true, that He would rise from the dead? I want to believe.” That had to be a part of Peter’s thoughts.

1. Why do you think Peter and the other apostles went running to the tomb after Mary Magdalene told them?

2. Even though Peter had heard often about Jesus rising from the dead, what thoughts could have gone through his mind when he saw the empty tomb?

3. Why did Jesus specifically mention Peter’s name (Mark 16:7)?

4. Did Peter believe Jesus had risen from the dead?

5. With Jesus’ power over death, how will you live your life, knowing that truth?

C. Samaritan Venture Acts 8:14-25

The apostles heard God was moving in Samaria, so they sent Peter and John as their representatives. These areas might have been the same areas Jesus walked through with the apostles in Luke 9:51-56. John was the one who suggested the Samaritans have lightning be cast upon them (be turned into crispy critters). Even though Peter is not mentioned in that passage, one can only wonder whether he was of the same mind-set because of his personality and lack of spiritual maturity. The other factor is Peter, James and John were the inner three for Jesus. They had to converse often and received the same experiences, so it is very possible Peter had similar thoughts.

(v. 15-17) The Holy Spirit had not come upon the Samaritan believers yet, so Peter and John laid hands on them to receive the Spirit.

(v. 18) Simon, the former sorcerer, saw this and wanted the ability to give the Holy Spirit to others by paying the apostles money.

(v. 20-24) Peter rebuked Simon for desiring and willing to pay to have the gift Peter and John had. Peter tore into Simon, probably challenged whether Simon was saved. Anyhow, Peter did not take this lightly, and got to the core of the problem – Simon’s heart. Once again, boldness from the relationship Peter had with Christ led the way. Repent and ask the Lord to forgive him of his attitude. Peter could see in Simon’s heart. He had an excellent handle on spiritual warfare and the understanding of sin. Simon had been heavily into Satanism. Again, the maturity and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit’s leading allowed Peter to understand where Simon was. All this broke Simon.

(v. 25) Peter and John proclaimed the gospel everywhere they went!

1. It is very possible Peter was with John when he suggested to Jesus that lightning be dropped down on the Samaritans for rejecting Jesus

(Luke 9:51-56). What could Peter have thought when they ended up going to Samaria?

2. How easy is it to take matters into your own hands and not allow God to control of the situation? Might we destroy or damage something God is doing, if we do not let Him control us?

3. If Peter did not believe God was in control of the situation, how might Peter have dealt with Simon?

4. Who is control of your life, God or you?

D. Prison Break Acts 12:1-19

Peter was put in prison by Herod after James (Son of Thunder) was killed by Herod. While Peter was in prison, the church prayed earnestly for him. The night prior to his trial, Peter was released from prison by an angel. He thought he was having a vision, until he was outside and the angel left. God had rescued him from Herod and the Jews who wanted him dead. Peter went to John Mark’s mother’s home and Rhoda answered the door. She was so overwhelmed, Peter was left standing at the door. Finally he was let in and eventually left for another place. He gave the glory to God and knew God was totally controlling his life.

1. What was the situation for Peter?

2. What did the church do when Peter was in prison?

3. How do you earnestly pray? (Luke 11:1-13)

4. What is the connection between earnest prayer and the sovereignty of God?

5. What did Peter think was happening when he got out of prison?

6. If you pray and your prayer is not positively answered, as we want something to occur, does that mean we didn’t pray earnestly enough, or there is sin in our lives? You need to examine your life and be honest about sin, but, if we do not get a good answer to our prayer, that does not mean we have sin in our lives.

7. What might Peter have been realizing and thinking, once he understood God had delivered him from death?

E. Jesus’ Return

Matthew 24:36-44; Luke 12:35-48, 54-56; 2 Peter 2:1-3, 13-14; 3:8-14

Those who teach false doctrines and false teaching are in for grave consequences. God will deal with them harshly and has a proven track record over history on this. This is a warning to leaders that we shall lead no one astray or give false teachings. Know the correct interpretations of what you’re teaching. All leaders will give an account for what we did and taught here on earth. Heed the warning! Question is, were these leaders who lead people so grossly away from the truth, saved in the first place? Could those who are saved and terribly leading people in the wrong direction, have salvation but not enjoy all the blessings in heaven? I don’t know. This I know, make sure I know what I teach is right doctrine and properly teach it.

3. What does the 2 Peter 3:8-10 passage teach us about God’s sovereignty?

CONTRASTS IN PETER’S LIFE

A. Confession of Christ versus The Denial

(Matt 16:13-20 (Mark 8:27-30; Luke 9:18-21)

Peter jumps out from the apostles and proclaims Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of God. Jesus emphasizes his name is Peter, the little rock, and on the Rock (Jesus) the church would be build. God revealed this to Peter – Peter was firing on all cylinders at that moment.

1. What does Peter proclaim?

2. What did Jesus mean when He said, “On this rock I will build My church?” That on the name and meaning of Christ, the Son of the Living God, that is the foundation of the church.

3. How strong was Peter’s faith when he spoke in John 6:60-69? Disciples were deserting Jesus and Jesus asked the apostles whether they wanted to go, too. Peter responded by where would they go, for Jesus had the words of eternal life – because Jesus was the Holy One of God, the true Messiah.

Compare to the Denial Mark 14:27-31, 66-72 (Matthew 26:31-35, 58, 69-75; Luke 22:31-38, 54-62; John 13:36-38, 18:15-18, 25-27)

Peter was adamant that he would stand with Jesus until the end. In Luke, Satan asks to sift him as wheat (work him over good). Jesus prayed his faith would not fail. Jesus did say in all three that Peter would deny Jesus three times before the rooster crowed. Then in all four gospels, we read the actual betrayal of Peter – the Galilean accent gave him away. Probably the last one to confront Peter was there when Peter cut off the guy’s ear. Plus several of others with this guy. The first two confrontations were by servant girls. His reaction after the rooster crowed was one of bitter remorse. Now Satan got an opportunity to really tempt him and Peter failed the test. The contrast between stating Jesus was the Messiah to denying knowing Jesus is stark. Fear, Satan’s buffeting, confusion, no Holy Spirit, lack of courage and boldness were all a part of the contrast. He essentially was on his own, though there was one other disciple with him (John 18). It is difficult to stand on your own. It is much easier when you have a supporting cast around you. How many of us would have done the same thing? All four gospels share this story. It was probably a turning point in Peter’s life and spiritual journey. He realized he could not do this on his own. My guess – he felt he was okay because he was in the inner circle and his impulsiveness gave him false security. “I can handle this – look, I am saying it, so I must have the conviction inside.” Points to how much do we as believers need to hold on to the Holy Spirit and yield to Him. Spiritual leaders must stay in a right relationship with God and be constantly yielding to the Holy Spirit.

4. Why was Peter adamant that he would not deny Jesus?

5. Why would Satan request to sift Peter as wheat?

6. How can a person confess Jesus like Peter did, and then at another time, emphatically deny knowing the same person?

7. What must spiritual leaders do to protect from one moment being so positive and confessing Jesus, and another moment be so negative in denying Jesus?

B. Naturally Impulsive versus Tender-hearted and Affectionate

Matthew 14:22-23; 16:21-28; 17:1-13 (Mark 5:2-13; Luke 9:28-36)

(14:22-23) Jesus comes out to the boat and the apostles think they are seeing a ghost. Jesus assures them that it is He. Peter then perhaps impulsively says if it is Jesus, tell him to come. He gets out of the boat and starts walking toward Jesus. He sees where he is at and the weather conditions, and begins to sink, when Jesus picks him up. He has little faith, according to Jesus, because Peter doubted. Yet no one else was willing to get out of the boat. Most were probably not risk takers. Peter did walk on water. His problem – he took his eyes off Jesus and put them on the surroundings and faltered. “You of little faith, keep looking and trusting Me,” says Jesus. He then later (in chapter 16) in the timeline indicates Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. Right after that Jesus predicts His death.

(16:21-28) Jesus says He will soon suffer and die, then rise on the third day. Peter pulled Jesus aside and rebuked Him. No way was Jesus going to die that way – we got a revolution to meet up with – Peter was adamant. Jesus sharply hit the point – Satan was deceiving Peter, trying to direct Jesus from His purpose. Shortly before, Peter confessed Jesus was the Messiah, then allowed Satan to tempt him into saying, “You can’t complete your purpose or mission.” If you are going to follow Jesus, you have to put Jesus first and be obedient to His ways and leading. It is the thoughts of God, not Satan, that need to control us. Keep God’s things and ways in mind. His ways are definitely not the ways we naturally look at things.

(17:1-13) All three accounts have Peter (with James and John) experiencing the Transfiguration, and it was Peter who spoke, asking if they should put up three shelters for Moses, Elijah and Jesus. When they heard God’s voice, they were greatly fearful. Jesus reassured them, and told them to tell no one of this until after the resurrection. Peter blurted out what he did because they were so frightened – he had to say something. His impulsiveness, and probably when nervous, he talked. He really didn’t know what he said. This occurred six days after rebuking Peter and allowing Satan to sift him, and a short time after confessing Jesus as the Messiah.

Impulsiveness

2. Why did none of the other apostles get out?

3. How do you relate to Peter, or even the other apostles, in times of faith development?

C. Presumptuous at Times versus Timid and Cowardly

1. In Matthew 16:22, Peter rebuked Jesus for foretelling His death.

John 13:8 has Peter telling Jesus that Jesus can’t wash his feet, and Peter cuts off Malchus’ ear in John 18:10. When Peter did these bold things, whom was he trusting? Himself, to a point, but also there had to be some faith involved because of his relationship with Jesus.

2. With his impulsiveness, could Peter have made presumptions and acted with boldness and courage?

3. Peter denied Jesus three times (Matthew 26:65-72) and, walking on the water, he sank (Mathew 14:30) Obviously, he acted as if he had no faith in Jesus at those moments. How could he have so quickly fallen in his faith? Not being controlled by the Spirit, letting his circumstances influence him, and not keep trusting Jesus to get him through those times.

4. What causes you and me to be controlled by the Holy Spirit, and then suddenly we are not controlled by the Spirit?

D. Self-sacrificing versus Self-seeking

1. In Mark 1:18, Peter immediately left the fishing nets when Jesus called, but in Matthew 19:27, Peter said, “He and the apostles left everything to follow Jesus, what will there be for them?” How difficult is it for you to continually trust Jesus for all the needs in your life, not asking anything in return?

2. How do we, as spiritual leaders, show our people that we have given everything to Jesus and He can do whatever He so desires with us?

CROSS-CULTURAL MINISTRY

(Acts 10-11, 15; Gal. 2)

A. Cornelius Experience (Acts 10:1-8) Even when we are not aware of what is going on in the spiritual world, God is working to prepare us for what is next. Be ready to receive what He has for you, just like Peter and Nehemiah. As God shows the needs, He is laying on our hearts, be ready to receive direction from God, vision for your next responsibility! We know there is a God-fearing man named Cornelius who had a vision from God telling him that he, through his men, was to make contact with Peter, a Jew. Cornelius was a Gentile, so were his soldiers and maybe the servants.

1. What was Cornelius’ background? Italian Regiment, Gentile, God-fearing, devout, went to the synagogue and either stayed outside or in the back to hear the teachings, very generous.

2. What affect do dreams and visions have in our Christianity today?

3. As you read verse 4, how active is God with non-believers?

4. How obedient was Cornelius to the angel?

B. Peter’s world is turned upside down (10:9-23)

· God was preparing Peter’s heart even before having this vision (like Nehemiah, God goes before you when He has you do something).

· While waiting for the afternoon meal to be prepared, Peter fell into a trance (like a drug-induced ecstasy, displacement of the mind).

· The dream was – he saw heaven open and a sheet came down from heaven and on it were four-footed animals, beasts, creeping things and birds – all things unclean to Jews. Peter was told to kill and eat. “No way – I’m a good, upstanding Jew!” God’s reply was, “What I call clean, don’t you retag or rename.”

· Dreams – hear of such in Middle East and Africa.

· Handling/eating things “:defiled” – Prejudices, cultures, traditions can become Pharisaical. It is the way we do it, thus must be biblical. Sometimes length of time a practice has occurred gives it biblical relevancy. Who or what am I not willing to work with, who do I treat as second class? Who are considered unclean in my world? Don’t let my theology or culture get in the way of my ministry! Seriously, look at what is biblical and what is cultural? Church on Sunday, Sunday school, versions of scripture, dress, facial hair and ornaments, baptism, view of spiritual gifts, pre-trib vs. post-trib, color of skin, work ethic, instruments/music (“jungle” music”), sometimes how we do our devotions (quiet times), smokers, drinking, overeating, some sexual practices, homosexuals (John 8), people with various diseases (AIDS, leprosy, etc.), how we raise our kids (pastor’s kids vs. regular kids), denominations, socio-economic groups, traditional, emerging, what makes a good Christian.

· Peter’s thing was Jews didn’t touch or eat what was on the sheet. He objected, even when God said to do it. His cultural convictions were so deep, God had a hard time breaking through – three times it took.

· God’s response was to not call anything unclean or impure that God had made clean/pure.

· God had to really work over Peter’s heart to prepare him for what was next, as the messengers from Cornelius showed up – Gentiles. The Spirit indicated Peter was to accept these guests in to the “Jewish” house,, which was a no-no for Jews! “Don’t waste time,” was the Spirit’s imperative, “go meet them and go with them!”

· The men told Peter what God was doing on Cornelius’ end. Peter invited them into the Jewish home. Remember the three called from outside the gate to get someone’s attention to speak to Peter, because they could not enter a Jew’s home, being Gentile.

· This was radical for Peter. He was a devout Jew, and what he saw on the sheet probably turned his stomach, but out cultural, traditional things can’t become biblical!

1. How does this passage become a teaching on missions? Peter was entering a foreign world right in his own area. Don’t let my theology or culture get in the way of ministry.

· We have all kinds of excuses to not go to do God’s work, whether it is across the street, or to the other end of the world.

· We tend to view our understanding of application of scripture, or how we live out various portions of scripture as the only way – Sunday vs. Saturday services for church.

· In leadership we need “the facts” straight as we minister and work with people. It is easy to become demanding over areas that can have some latitude. Sometimes tradition or preference can be misinterpreted for Biblical truth.

· Our prejudices can affect how we treat and value people who are “unclean” in my world. As spiritual leaders, we represent Jesus and the world is watching.

· God has to break us out of our prejudices as we have built them up.

· We must take the lead and show compassion, grace, mercy to people – look at Jesus in John 8 with the adulterous woman. He didn’t let His theology get in the way of ministering to the woman. It takes a real spiritual leader to know what God requires, or waits and does it when the rest of the Christians are saying to not do it.

· To minister to someone who is not like us, walls need to be broken down, or we won’t go, or our attitude toward that person or group will be clearly seen. Spiritual leaders need to pave the way, need to be the least prejudiced group of people.

11. Why did the three Gentile men call out to Peter from outside the house, rather than entering the house and asking for Peter?

C. Breaking down traditional barriers (10:23-48)

(verse 23) Peter goes with these men from Caesarea to Cornelius’ house. Again, here is a Jew going, first of all, with some Gentiles and secondly, goes into the house of a Gentile. (Cross-cultural missions at its finest.) (v. 24) It is no small gathering of Gentiles showing up. Cornelius invites family and friends. (v. 25) He falls at Peter’s feet as Peter enters, but Peter will have none of that – he is only a man. (v. 28) Peter right away indicates that he is breaking Jewish law by doing this (Jewish visiting with Gentiles). But God showed him not to call any man unclean or impure. All people are created in God’s image!!! So he came without a fight. As Cornelius and Peter exchanged what went on in their lives the past several days, they saw God was working. Cornelius said they were ready to listen to everything the Lord had commanded Peter to say (v. 33). Peter better have been listening to the Lord! Wow!

(v. 34) God does not show favoritism, but accepts men from all the nations of the world who fear Him and do what is right. Israel is God’s chosen people and Jesus was sent to Israel. Jesus had His ministry here on earth, and Peter was eyewitness to that, plus the death and resurrection of Jesus. The apostles and others were commanded to preach this Good News, and everyone who believes in Jesus receives forgiveness of sins through Christ. (v. 44) While Peter was speaking, the Holy Spirit descended on the people. The Jewish believers were astonished that this happened to the Gentiles. The Gentiles were speaking in tongues and praising God. (v. 47) Peter saw they were believers and had them all baptized. God used Peter to break through the Jewish believers’ mind-set. All people, regardless of background, could become believers. That was a complete paradigm shift in thinking. This was the beginning of working through who was a believer and what rules believers should follow. This would be tough for the Jewish believers to work through. God began with the visible leader of the church at that time, and so the impact could be felt immediately. It is easy to put God in a box. Then we can explain Him better with our finite minds, but it doesn’t work that way! What ways do I put God in my box?

3. How much do you agree with Peter’s statement in verses 34-35 and live it? How is your commitment shown in your life?

4. What impact (do you feel) did Jesus’ ministering to other people groups (like Samaritans, Roman centurion [Luke 7]) have on Peter? Is it a form of discipling?

5. Why did God use Peter, one of the most influential and visible spiritual leaders of his day, to reach out to the Gentiles?

6. In what ways do we put God in a “box” (He can n only work in a certain way or with a certain people)?

7. In what ways has God worked, whether in your life or in others, that has surprised you that God would work that certain way?

D. Criticism – the natural response (11:1-18) Word got back to the church leaders (apostles and brothers) what Peter had done with the Gentile Cornelius and his family/friends. The first thing these leaders did was to criticize Peter for what he had done (hardly anything has changed in 2,000 years). They were putting their theology ahead of ministry and the leading of the Holy Spirit. So Peter confidently shared his experiences. He told the truth – didn’t embellish the story to make himself look better, and let the truth be known. When we see evidence of God working, even though we may not agree with the total theology of the people, we need to let God do His thing. Why oppose God? Look at the fruit that results. Evaluate the fruit through the filter of scripture. The sad thing is the leaders right away criticized, instead of knowing Peter’s heart. They could have waited to hear Peter’s explanation of why he did what he did, and then make a decision based on the facts. Why do we do this – jump to conclusions about how we view an activity of fellow believers whom we know – we have seen the fruit of their labor. Theology clouds our perspective often. My theology may not always be correct, or at least the whole picture.

1. What was the first response of the leaders back in Judea?

2. Why is criticism usually the first response of Christians, even though we know the person’s heart?

3. Have you ever been criticized? How did you feel?

4. How should we handle situations when we hear of something out of the ordinary, especially if we know the person and his/her heart who is in question? Give them first an opportunity to explain before we make conclusions.

5. Why do we oppose God at times? Because it is not the way we have done ministry, or are used to. Also, it was not our idea, for if it were, we would be in total agreement with God.

6. What theology clouds your thinking? Don’t let your theology get in the way of your ministry.

7. What ways did Jesus teach Peter about not letting your theology get in the way of your ministry? Woman at the well, the adulterous woman in John 8, healing lepers, feeding the disciples on the Sabbath.

8. Why did Peter go through the whole story of his experience?

9. Peter didn’t justify himself as he shared the story. How difficult is it to not make yourself look better when you have to explain yourself?

E. Confrontation over cultures (Galatians 2)

(1-10) Paul meets up with the apostles, including Peter. As they discussed the ministry among Gentiles and Jews, it was agreed upon that Paul focus his ministry on the Gentiles and the apostles on the Jews. The key leaders, Peter, James and John, gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and Paul, indicating their complete blessing on this ministry. Again, key leadership needs to be in step with what God is doing. This chapter of ministry began when Peter had the vision in Acts 10, and carried out, in obedience, the direction God was leading him, even though it was a gorge-like paradigm shift in ministry thinking. When God is working mightily in a situation, whether direction for ministry or even a tragedy, He raises up leadership to take responsibility and lead the way. (11-16) Paul did oppose Peter in Antioch because when the Jewish Christians were not around, Peter hung out with the Gentile Christians and ate with them. When Jewish Christians showed up from James (in Jerusalem), Peter and the other Jewish Christians backed off from that practice of hanging with the Gentile Christians, all because of peer pressure. Peter was forcing Gentile Christians to follow Jewish customs (circumcision). Hypocrisy – big time. Even Barnabas was part of this hypocrisy. Cultural religion and theology was so ingrained in Peter that he was like a floppy fish out of water over the whole Jewish/Gentile issues. Old practices, thinking, customs, and tradition are hard to change or even modify. This stifles the Holy Sprit to do His work. Faith in Christ saves, not the law, circumcision, church attendance, behavior, rituals, customs, etc. As leaders we must decipher what is biblical and what is tradition/cultural, and allow the Holy Spirit to flow freely. Leadership can significantly stifle the Spirit, even to the point of squelching Him. Thankfully, God is sovereign. Peter observed this often with Jesus as He spent time with sinners, Samaritan woman, adulterous woman, dealt with the religious leaders.

1. From verses 1-10, what was the direction of the church leadership to reaching the Gentiles?

2. How important is it for leadership to be in agreement when new ministry opportunities arise? What role does the Holy Spirit play? As spiritual leaders, we need to be listening to the Holy Spirit’s leading. If the Spirit is leading, there should be agreement. This does not mean that concerns may not be raised that are legitimate. Often concerns arise due to a person’s spiritual gifts, procedures and plans on how to implement a vision. Remember, vision is from God, plans are man-made. Nehemiah had to change his plans part way through in order to finish the wall.

3. When conflicts arise, how should leaders handle them (v. 11)?

4. What was the problem between Paul and Peter (v. 11-16)?

5. Paul confronted Peter. Why confront Peter when all the other Jewish Christians were doing it also? Peter was clearly the leader and, as the leader goes, so goes the crowd.

6. What customs that you follow are easy to pass on to new Christians (when those customs have nothing to do with true Christianity)?

7. How hard was it for Peter to break out of his old thinking pattern, or to change how he viewed tradition?

8. As Peter was able to observe, how did Jesus beak away from tradition when He ministered to people?

9. Explain in non-church or non-religious terms, how someone becomes a Christian.

F. Resolution of tradition and Christianity (Showdown at O.K. Jerusalem Corral) (Acts 15:1-29) The circumcised question kept coming up, “got to follow the traditions and the way we have done it” argument. Question essentially was, “What is biblical salvation versus cultural Christianity/religion that has nothing to do with salvation?” The blow-up occurred in Antioch, so Paul and Barnabas were appointed to go up to Jerusalem and meet with the church leaders (apostles and elders). At the meeting, some believers who were Pharisees at one time said the Gentiles had to be circumcised and obey Moses’ law to truly be believers. (v. 7ff) Peter got up and verified that the Holy Spirit was being given to the Gentiles when they believed in the gospel. By faith, the Gentiles were accepting the good news, and it is in the heart that people are changed. Why put external “yokes” on people that the ones already trying to bear with these yokes, can’t handle them either? It is only through grace one is saved. Without the Cornelius experience, Peter, I am sure, would not have spoken this way. He had worked through grace versus works, biblical vs. cultural. It had to be difficult to be the one to take the lead to share these thoughts and convictions. He was going against thousands of years of tradition and the argument that the Jews were God’s chosen anointed ones, and they set the standard because Moses gave them the Law (paradigm shift). Peter had reached the level of personhood in leadership for he had the respect and honor due him. (v. 12ff) Paul and Barnabas shared what God was doing and James reminded the gathering of the Old Testament prophecy that the gospel would go to the Gentiles. So he suggested a couple of guidelines on sexual morality and hygiene items. The council all agreed, and so the Law was not to become a yoke, nor circumcision. What yokes do we (I) put upon people? Just like Peter, we need to work through our faith, and whatever standards we place upon ourselves, can’t be put on others or it’s legalism or Pharisaism. Yokes – dress, behavior, dance, how to do devotions, attitudes, prejudices, denominational requirements.

1. Why was it necessary for the church leaders to meet and discuss this issue?

2. How important was it for Peter to be the one to address the assembly?

3. Where does courageous spiritual boldness fit in the life of a spiritual leader? Somewhere and sometimes as a spiritual leader we will most likely be put in a situation where we will have to boldly stand before a group of people and either obey God or man, by the way we respond.

4. How do you develop spiritual boldness? Like Peter, spend time with Jesus, seek the Holy Spirit’s leading (being obedient to the Holy Spirit and the Word), pray, have others praying for you.

5. How important was the Cornelius experience for Peter? How did it prepare him for this meeting?

6. How did the rest of the assembly react (v. 12-29)?
